I created the video-performance “Lágrimas peligrosas” (Dangerous Tears) after multiple unpleasant—and even dangerous—experiences I’ve had as an adult woman who finds herself crying more frequently, often in situations that others seem to find unacceptable.
The work includes video of myself crying, combined with photographs from a performance for the camera created especially for this piece.
The audio includes my reflections and questions in Spanish. Some of the photographs contain signs in English asking questions like: “Who is seen as needing to be controlled?”
The fact that my tears are the result of withdrawal symptoms from psychiatric medications that were damaging my internal organs seems irrelevant to museum guards, colleagues, or even friends and family.
Thus, the overarching question of the piece is: What is so dangerous about an adult crying?
