José Rolando Rivero Moreno (Cuba, 1957 - 2022)

José Rolando Rivero Moreno was a distinguished Cuban poet, essayist, playwright, and visual artist whose influence endures in Cuban culture. Recognized in his hometown as one of the most prolific and productive artists, Rivero was a fundamental part of the faculty at the Provincial School of Plastic Arts in Ciego de Ávila, teaching Theory and Art History since its inception. Known as “The Urban Legend” in the Avileña region, his charisma and vast knowledge made him an essential mentor for new generations of artists. Under his guidance, artists such as Naivy Pérez and Lainier Díaz graduated with honors, earning Gold Titles from the University of the Arts (ISA). His essays on plastic arts have been published in various national and international journals. Rivero left an indelible mark with his solo and collective exhibitions and was awarded prestigious literary prizes, including the Roque Dalton Prize in 1990, the Ávila Prize in 1993, the La Gaceta de Cuba Prize in 2013, and the Nicolás Guillén Prize in 2016, all in the poetry category. Additionally, he was the curator and organizer of the Contemporary Art Week in Ciego de Ávila. He participated in significant international exhibitions such as “Un mundo feliz” at the 10th Havana Biennial in 2009, “Cuban Virtualities: New Media Art from the Island” at the Tufts University Art Gallery in Boston in 2013, and at the Sullivan Galleries and Betty Rymer Art Centers in Chicago in 2014. His dedication to teaching and his artistic work enrich the cultural heritage of Cuba, inspiring and guiding future generations of creators.
