Since 2021, in certain cities across Brazil, I have been conducting research to revisit sites that once served as instruments of authoritarian governments, as well as those that resisted repression during the civil-military dictatorship (1964–1985).

Rio de Janeiro was a key location for many significant movements.

Arbitrary arrests, torture, censorship, human rights violations, and the persecution of left-wing intellectuals and politicians were often orchestrated by the extreme right—a segment of society that remains active today.

The video presents these locations with an actor dressed in the style of 1960s–70s military police.

The actor is selected based on year of birth, which must fall within the early years after the dictatorship, symbolizing the age of democracy in the country.

Despite this connection, the video questions how democracy can remain “tainted” when shaped by a legacy of repression.

Technically, the video uses characteristics of silent film (paralleling how many voices are silenced under dictatorship), and the sound design is reconstructed from historical accounts.
